March: The Month of Many Birthstones

March: The Month of Many Birthstones

The most commonly cited birthstone for March is Aquamarine. Bloodstone and Jasper are considered alternate birthstones for March.

I will begin with aquamarine. Aquamarine is a member of a classification of crystals called beryl. Berly includes aquamarine, Morganite, heliodor, emerald, bixbite, goshenite and maxixe. The word aquamarine conjures images of deep blue green hues. The crystal is found naturally in shades of very light blue, blue, blue-green and even light green. All are natural aquamarines. Aquamarine colour can be changed through heat. This is where the assumption that aquamarine should be a more narrow range of colours comes from. The deep blue green colour that is often sought after is achieved through heating aquamarine. Heated aquamarine crystals are still powerful crystals that have the same geometric molecular patterns.

Aquamarine is a calming stone, like sitting quietly by calming water. In fact, the word aquamarine originated in the 1700’s and means “water of the sea”. Sailors believed aquamarine would protect them on their voyage. It is an excellent crystal for the throat chakra, aiding in communication and understanding. The calming effects of aquamarine help those who feel overwhelmed and provides comfort, courage and confidence. It is an excellent stone for anyone who is afraid of public speaking as well as those who rely on communication regularly such as teachers and presenters.

Bloodstone an alternate birthstone for March. Bloodstone is a variety of chalcedony that comes in two categories. The first is heliotrope, which is transparent with spots of red and green within it. The second type is plasma, which is a dark, opaque green with small amounts of red colouring.

Historically, bloodstone was called the martyr’s stone and was often carved into crucifixes. This practice originated with the Christian belief that bloodstone was first formed when the blood of Jesus landed on the ground.

Blood stone is used to alleviate illnesses that affect the bloodstream. It is a crystal that stands for justice and courage. It helps with decision making by calming the wearer, and clearing away negative energy and jealousy. Bloodstone is also said to bring good health and good fortune.

Like bloodstone, jasper is a form of quartz chalcedony. Jasper is found all over the world and forms in a multitude of colours and patterns. With so many varieties it is not surprising that there is evidence that jasper has been used by cultures in every part of the globe throughout history. Each variety has its own energy and uses. It would take an entire book to describe them all. What they share in common is their ability to offer a soothing, calming and balancing effect. This is why jasper is known as “the supreme nurturer”

To celebrate those born in March, all aquamarine, jasper and bloodstone artwork and jewellery is on sale. Until the end of March.
